Shiftlights V2 - User-Guide

🏁 Getting Started

  1. Power up your kit and connect to the WiFi network broadcast by your Shiftlight device:
    • WiFi Name (AP): BMWShiftlightsV2
    • Password: ew_shiftlights_v2
  2. Open your browser and visit shiftlights.local or 192.168.1.1.
    • ⚠️ Hint: If your device connects to the WiFi, but the configuration page does not load, you may need to temporarily disable your mobile internet/data connection (especially on smartphones and tablets) to force your device to use the Shiftlight's WiFi network.
      It can also help to use the privacy/incognito mode in your browser to reduce DNS problems.

🎛️ User Interface Overview

All features are accessible through a clear card-based web interface. The main cards are:

1. Shiftlight Configuration 🚦

This card contains three tabs for configuring your shiftlight’s behavior:

1️⃣ Minimum & Maximum RPM Tab

  • Sliders allow you to set the RPM at which the LEDs start to illuminate (min) and when they start blinking (max).
  • This lets you tailor the shiftlight to your car’s power band and your driving style.
  • Two sliders control how long the LEDs stay ON and OFF during blinking (in milliseconds).
  • Want a rapid, urgent strobe? Set short on/off times. Prefer a more relaxed blink? Increase the timing for a chill, smooth flash.

3️⃣ Signal Calibration Tab

  • Max RPM Change Rate:
    Set a threshold (e.g., 10 RPM/ms) to filter out unrealistic RPM spikes. This helps the controller distinguish between genuine fast acceleration and electrical glitches.
  • Startup Grace Period:
    Set how long (after engine start) the system should filter and stabilize the signal, reducing false readings from startup “noise”.

2. Premium Features ⭐

The Premium Features card showcases a list of advanced options and their activation status. Here’s how it works:

  • Feature List & Activation:
    Clearly see which features are available and whether they are unlocked on your device.
  • Buy Premium Features:
    Use the button to visit the online shop and purchase add-ons.
  • Device ID:
    Copy your unique device ID with the copy button.
    • This ID is required at checkout to generate your activation code.
    • To unlock a premium feature, first copy your device ID, enter it in the webshop at the feature you wish to purchase, then retrieve your activation code via email or from the Premium Feature Codes Center.
    • Finally, enter the code in the UI under the activation code input field.

💼 RPM Presets Premium Feature Add-On

  • Instantly access three customizable RPM presets at the press of a button.
  • Each preset can be relabeled and will be saved permanently, even after a reboot.
  • Why upgrade?
    Effortlessly switch between street, sport, or track settings without manual reselecting RPM ranges — maximize performance and convenience for any situation!

🎉 Gauge Sweep Premium Feature Add-On

  • Enable or disable a dynamic startup sweep effect.
  • Adjust the sweep duration with a slider.
  • Future updates:
    This feature will soon include additional startup animations (random glitter, double flash, etc.) via OTA updates — all bundled in this add-on!
  • Why upgrade?
    Wow your friends and get instant feedback that your shiftlight is alive and ready every time you start your car!

🚗 CAN On-Board-Diagnostics (OBD) — Future Premium Feature

We’re hard at work developing an exciting new premium feature: CAN On-Board-Diagnostics (OBD).

  • What to expect:
    In the future, you’ll be able to connect your car’s CAN bus directly to the shiftlight board (the required CAN chip is already pre-installed on your board!).
    • This will allow you to read and display real-time CAN data in the web interface — opening up many new possibilities for car data visualization.
  • Easy setup:
    Once released, you will simply splice and connect the relevant CAN wires to your board for plug-and-play operation.
  • I2C OLED Display Support (planned):
    The hardware also includes an I2C interface for an external OLED screen. In the future, you may be able to display selected CAN data directly on a miniature OLED display for in-car dashboard integration.
  • Development timeline:
    This feature is under active development. Stay tuned for future firmware updates and announcements!

3. Firmware Update 🔄

Stay up to date with the latest features and improvements:

  • The kit automatically checks for new firmware versions when online (your device must have an active internet connection via mobile data or LAN interace when using on PC for this to work).
  • The Install Center button redirects you to the Firmware Center where you can easily upload new update (.bin) files.
  • No need to physically get to the kit!
    All updates are performed wirelessly, making it easy and safe to keep your shiftlight up to date.

4. Diagnostics & System Info 🩺

The Diagnostics card helps you ensure everything is running smoothly and lets you test your installation:

Tab 1: System Status

  • Uptime (how long the board has been running)
  • Memory usage
  • CPU Temperature
  • Test LED Button: Simulates the LEDs running up and down — perfect for installation checks!
  • Reboot Button: Restart the board safely from the web interface.

Tab 2: Last Uptime

  • See how long the board was powered on the last time it ran.

📝 FAQ

Q: I’m connected to the WiFi, but the page won’t load?
A: Try disabling your device's mobile internet/data so your phone/tablet uses the Shiftlight’s WiFi for browsing. Using privacy/incognito mode in your browser may also help with DNS issues.

Q: How do I unlock premium features?
A: Copy your Device ID, enter it in the webshop at the feature you want to purchase, then retrieve the activation code via email or from the code center (Premium Feature Codes). Finally, enter the code in the UI under the activation code input field.

Q: How do I update the firmware?
A: Use the Install Center button in the web interface to upload new firmware wirelessly.

🖼️ Important UI Display Information

The configuration interface and all screenshots/pictures in our webshop show the UI as it appears on mobile devices.

  • While the kit also works on desktops and tablets, we recommend emulating a mobile device (narrow width/smartphone mode in your browser’s developer tools) to get the full, responsive UI experience.
  • Only in “mobile responsiveness mode” are all features (sliders, tabs, etc.) visible exactly as shown in our documentation and webshop images.
